Darshan & Rituals at Sri Dadh Devi Mata Temple, Kota

March 25, 2025 /Posted by0110pankajg@gmail.com / 243 / 0

The Sri Dadh Devi Mata Temple is one of the most revered and ancient temples in Kota, Rajasthan, dedicated to Goddess Dadhimati (Dadh Devi), an incarnation of Goddess Durga. The temple holds immense religious significance and is deeply rooted in Hindu mythology and local traditions.

Visit The Place

1. Mythological Origins & Legend

  • According to Skanda Purana, Goddess Dadhimati is believed to be the sister of the divine sage Dadhichi, a revered figure in Hindu scriptures known for donating his bones to create Lord Indra’s vajra (thunderbolt).
  • The temple is associated with the legend of the demon Vritrasura, whom Lord Indra defeated using the vajra made from Sage Dadhichi’s bones. It is said that Goddess Dadhimati protected the region from evil forces, earning her the status of a Kuldevi (family deity) for many communities.
  • Another legend suggests that the goddess appeared in the dream of a local king or priest, instructing him to establish her temple at the current site.

2. Historical Significance & Establishment

  • The temple is believed to have been constructed over 1,200 years ago, making it one of the oldest temples in the Hadoti region (Kota-Bundi area).
  • Some historical records suggest that the temple was patronized by the Hada Rajputs, the ruling dynasty of Kota and Bundi, who worshipped Goddess Dadhimati as their Kuldevi (clan deity).
  • The temple’s architecture reflects medieval Rajasthani style, with influences from Gurjara-Pratihara and later Rajput designs.

3. Temple Architecture & Features

  • The temple is built in traditional North Indian Nagara style, with a shikhara (spire) and intricate carvings.
  • The sanctum sanctorum (garbhagriha) houses the idol of Goddess Dadhimati, depicted in a fierce form, adorned with weapons and seated on a lion (like Durga).
  • The temple complex includes smaller shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva, Lord Ganesha, and other deities.
  • A sacred kund (water tank) is present within the premises, where devotees take ritual baths before offering prayers.

4. Religious Importance & Worship

  • The temple is considered highly powerful for wish fulfillment, protection from evil, and overcoming obstacles.
  • Devotees, especially from the Gurjar, Rajput, and Brahmin communities, visit the temple to seek blessings for prosperity and safety.
  • The goddess is also worshipped for childbirth blessings and marital harmony.
  • Special rituals like Jagran (night-long prayers), Hawan (fire offerings), and Abhishek (holy bathing of the deity) are performed regularly.

5. Major Festivals & Celebrations

  • Navratri (Chaitra & Sharad) – The temple witnesses grand celebrations during both Navratris, with daily aartis, cultural performances, and fairs.
  • Dadh Devi Fair (Mela) – A large annual fair is held, attracting thousands of pilgrims.
  • Deepawali & Holi – Special pujas and decorations mark these festivals.

6. Location & Accessibility

  • The temple is located in Kota city, near Dadhdevi Road, making it easily accessible.
  • Nearest Railway Station: Kota Junction (3 km away).
  • Nearest Airport: Kota Airport (domestic), Jaipur International Airport (250 km).

Conclusion

The Sri Dadh Devi Mata Temple is not just a religious site but a living heritage of Kota’s spiritual and cultural history. With its ancient legends, royal patronage, and deep-rooted traditions, the temple continues to be a beacon of faith for devotees across Rajasthan.
