Ulta Qila ( Jhusi ), Prayagraj: Unraveling the Upside-Down Fort’s Secrets

February 5, 2025 /Posted by0110pankajg@gmail.com / 191 / 0

Ulta Qila, also known as Ulta Kila, is an ancient and mysterious site located in Jhusi, Prayagraj. It appears as a series of mounds along the banks of the Ganges River, beneath which lie buried structures. The very name of the fort, meaning “Upside-Down Fort,” intrigues people. It’s renowned not only for its unique architecture and mysterious legends but also as a symbol of ancient history.

Ancient History

Origin of the Proverb: After some time, the people of that city began to be oppressed. The oppression increased so much that the entire city was turned upside down, and it was named Ulta Qila. After this, the proverb ‘Andher Nagri Chaupat Raja, Taka Ser Bhaji Taka Ser Khaja’ (A dark city, a foolish king, where vegetables and sweets sell for the same price) originated.

Pratishthanpur City: According to historical accounts, the ancient city of Pratishthanpur once stood here, serving as the capital of the Chandravanshi kings.

King Haribong: It’s said that the foolish King Haribong ruled this place. Many stories about the king’s foolishness were also famous. The king had no concern for his subjects. Therefore, this city came to be called Andher Nagri (city of darkness).

Mythological Tales

  • Curse of Guru Gorakhnath and Matsyendra Nath: According to Professor Yogeshwar Tiwari, once Guru Gorakhnath and Matsyendra Nath went to bathe in the Sangam, but King Haribong did not honor them. Angered by this, both saints cursed the city. The entire city was scorched by their curse, and since then, it has been called Jhusi.

Temples and Caves

  • Ram Janki Temple: There is an ancient Ram Janki temple in this fort, in which many other idols of gods and goddesses are also installed. Many devotees still come to this temple for darshan.
  • Shri Hanuman Cave: There is also a Shri Hanuman cave in this fort. After descending 27 steps into this cave, one can have darshan of Hanuman Ji.

Current Status

  • ASI Oversight: Ulta Qila is currently under the supervision of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
  • Need for Preservation: This historical site is lamenting its dilapidated condition. In the absence of proper conservation, the existence of this ancient heritage is in danger.

Ulta Qila, Jhusi, Prayagraj, is a unique confluence of history, mythology, and religious significance. It is not just an ancient fort, but also a symbol of our cultural heritage. It is necessary to take appropriate steps for its preservation and development, so that future generations can also learn about this historical heritage and draw inspiration from it.
