  • Foundation: The foundation stone was laid in 1871 by Lady Muir Elizabeth Huntly Wemyss, wife of Sir William Muir, then Lieutenant Governor of the North-Western Provinces.
  • Consecration and Completion: The cathedral was consecrated in 1887 and fully completed in 1891.
  • Architect: Designed by the renowned British architect Sir William Emerson, who also designed iconic structures like the Victoria Memorial in Kolkata and Crawford Market in Mumbai.
  • Purpose: Built during the British colonial era, it served as a place of worship for the British community in Allahabad (now Prayagraj).
  • Church of North India (CNI): Today, it belongs to the Church of North India, a united Protestant church.

Architectural Grandeur:

  • Gothic Revival Style: The cathedral is a magnificent representation of 13th-century Gothic style, characterized by pointed arches, ribbed vaults, stained glass windows, and intricate stonework.
  • “Patthar Girja”: Locally known as “Patthar Girja” (Church of Stones) due to its construction primarily using cream-colored sandstone from Chunar.
  • Impressive Dimensions: The cathedral is about 31 meters in height, with a nave approximately 40 feet wide and 130 feet long. The total length of the church is around 240 feet, and the internal width is about 56 feet.

    • Intricate Marble Work: The floors are adorned with intricate inlaid marble designs.
