Visit The Place

Mythological Significance:

  • Connection to Lord Rama: According to the Shiva Purana, this is the sacred spot where Lord Rama worshipped Lord Shiva after crossing the Ganges River during his exile from Ayodhya. This connection to Lord Rama adds to the temple’s importance for devotees.
  • Someshwar Mahadev: The main deity of the temple is Someshwar Mahadev, a form of Lord Shiva. The name “Someshwar” refers to the moon god (Soma), and it’s believed that Lord Shiva here is the “Rudra Roop” (a fierce form) of Lord Shankar associated with the moon. He is also known as “Ekadaksh Rudra.”

Historical Construction:

  • Built by a Nepali King: The temple, sometimes referred to as “Shiv Kachehri,” was constructed in 1825 by Rana Jung Bahadur, a Nepali king.
  • 306 Shivlingas: It is said that Rana Jung Bahadur had 306 rulers under him, and each of them installed a Shivlinga (a symbolic representation of Lord Shiva) at the temple. However, currently, only around 280 Shivlingas remain.
  • North Indian Architectural Style: The temple is built in the North Indian style of architecture, featuring shikharas (spires) and domes.

Present Day:

  • Active Place of Worship: Shivkoti Mahadev Temple continues to be an active place of worship for Hindus. Devotees visit the temple to offer prayers to Lord Shiva, especially on Mondays, which are considered auspicious for Shiva worship.
  • Annual Fair: An annual fair is held at the temple during the Shravan month (roughly July-August in the English calendar), attracting many pilgrims and devotees.

Significance:

  • Religious Importance: The temple is significant for its association with Lord Rama and its dedication to Lord Shiva as Someshwar Mahadev.
  • Historical Significance: Its construction by a Nepali king in the 19th century adds to its historical value.
  • Cultural Significance: As a place of active worship and a site for an annual fair, it holds cultural importance for the local community and Hindu devotees.

In summary, Shivkoti Mahadev Temple is a historically and religiously significant site in Prayagraj, connected to Lord Rama and dedicated to Lord Shiva, built in the 19th century by a Nepali king.
